The paper introduces a new type of series connection for thin film solar modules that is mainly based on pointwise contacts. We describe the functionality of the new concept and present a method to calculate optimal cell stripe geometries. Finally, the applicability of the new concept is demonstrated by means of an amorphous silicon thin film module. The new series connection leads to a relative efficiency increase of approximately 3% compared with the standard series connection.
