This paper suggests that the mean absolute error (MAE) relative to the mean measured value may be the preferred metric to quantify the relative (percent) dispersion accuracy of irradiance models. This is because the metric is less sensitive to outliers and depends less upon the threshold applied to the validation data (e.g., whether nighttime values are included or not in the statistics).
