A novel double-layer thin film of ZnO with an underlayer of porous nanoparticles and an overlayer of nanosheets was synthesized on a conducting substrate by a simple one-step potentiostatic electrodeposition, followed by a pyrolysis treatment. After the growth mechanism of the double layer was confirmed, the film was applied for high-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells to achieve an efficiency of 4.65%.
