Two approaches to mixed substituent poly(vinyloxycylotriphosphazenes) have been explored. Polymerization of mixed substituent cyclophosphazene monomers is limited by numerous factors with chain transfer being the most significant. The reactivity of the olefinic center is sensitive to the phosphazene substituents. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of the pentachlorocyclotriphosphazene unit in [CH2CH(ON3P3Cl5)]n leads to complete substitution of the chlorine atoms only by the trifluoroethoxy group. Partial substitution by phenoxy, methyl amino, dimethyl, and diethyl amino groups was achieved. Thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and pyrolysis mass spectrometry studies have been conducted on all new polymers. Evidence for complex, competing decompositions processes has been obtained
