As the environmental impact and sustainability of conventional polymer materials becomes of increasing concern, research into polymers from renewable sources is growing. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is the most widely investigated, but for use in as many applications as possible its properties must be enhanced. This Review looks at the recent progress in toughening of PLA by plasticization, copolymerization, and melt-blending with flexible polymers. Reactive blending was shown to be especially effective in achieving super-toughness.
