Although compatibility and phase structure of polymer blends can be studied by different techniques, detailed information on the miscibility at local scale is very difficult to obtain. Electrostatic force microscopy is an evolution of conventional AFM that allows mapping of the dielectric properties of the sample simultaneously with topological and phase separation information, thus providing a new powerful tool in the study of compatibility of blends at the nanoscale. Here, it is used to demonstrate that polystyrene and poly(vinyl acetate) are thermodynamically immiscible polymers.
