Commercially available products offer a stable platform upon which new technologies can be developed. One such low-cost multifunctional material is cellulose acetate-backed adhesive tape, whose hygroscopic behavior renders it useful as a moisture-controlled transducer. This work presents the investigation of an off-the-shelf, moisture-responsive, acetate-backed adhesive tape for fabricating smart, inexpensive, water-responsive millimeter-scale actuators via laser machining.
