Hexagonal platelets formed from [Pd2(dba)3]:RNA precursor solutions are investigated. Crystalline platelets rapidly degrade through loss of Pd atoms from dibenzylideneacetone (dba) ligand cages. Once released, Pd atoms aggregate into Pd clusters, which grow and transform into Pd nanocrystals under electron beam or through thermal annealing. The pure RNA sequences used here appear to play no role in templating crystallization.
