Three types of modified silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) composed of a same silver core but different surface coatings are synthesized and their toxicities compared. The results reveal that the toxicity can be modulated by modifying the surface chemistry since this determines the different cellular uptake and agglomeration behavior of nanoparticles with the same silver core. Additionally, all studied Ag NPs are less toxic than free silver ions taking silver nitrate as reference.
