The article by Carsten Deibel (pp. 2731–2736) was selected for the cover of this issue, largely dedicated to the symposium “Organic Photovoltaics: from Single Molecules to Devices” (held in the framework of the DPG Spring Meeting 2009 of the German Physical Society), by the guest editors S. Rathgeber, K. Leo, and T. Thurn-Albrecht. Hybrid organic polymer–fullerene solar cells are the focus of recent attention due to their great potential to provide for low-cost, high-efficiency photovoltaics on flexible substrates (upper right in the cover picture). The efficiency of such devices, from light absorption to photocurrent flow, is dominated by the processes of charge separation and recombination (left). The combination of simulations and experimental techniques, such as photo-induced charge extraction (lower right), allows for the identification of the contribution of these fundamental processes to the photocurrent.
