With miniaturization of electronic circuits interface properties become more and more dominant also in electronic dc transport. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of the relation between structure, growth modes and conductance at the atomic scale is of utmost importance. The sketch provides an example of a four-probe measurement on a structured surface, which, when zoomed-in to the atomic scale, may reveal structural details as in the example of a monolayer structure of Pb on a Si(557) surface shown as inset.
