Due to its p-like character, the valence band in GaAs has a complex structure with strong spin-orbit coupling. Here, Korn and Schüller review their recent experiments on hole spin dynamics and valence-band spin density excitations in GaAs-based quantum wells. The authors use resonant spin amplification to observe hole spin dephasing times above 70 ns at low temperatures. With resonant inelastic light scattering, they are able to directly probe the k-dependent valence-band spin splitting.
