There is a growing interest in using carbon fibre composites as structural materials in aviation and transport. This Letter discusses the use of inkjet printing to deposit droplets of thermoplastic materials onto resin pre-impregnated carbon fibre in the initial formation stages of the composite. The final as-prepared samples show significantly improved mechanical properties for an overall weight increase of less than 1%.
