The effects of lattice discreteness on polaron properties in quasi-one-dimensional molecular chains are discussed. The emergence of the Peierls–Nabarro potential relief, constituting periodically arranged potential barriers that may arise on or between lattice sites, is predicted and can profoundly affect polaron transport properties. Criteria for polaron propagation along the chain can be formulated in terms of the threshold velocity and the values of system parameters.
