A topic of growing interest in the research on halogen bonds is the optimization of Lewis bases to tune the interaction, and as such their applications. The B–B bond is suggested as a good electron donor in halogen bonding. Using diborane and its derivatives as a model system, substitution and cooperative effects can tune the strength of the bond, with prominent effects occurring especially when Li substitutions and cooperativity are combined.
