Per-Olov Löwdin (1916–2000), arguably one of the most influential quantum chemists of the “second generation,” was paramount to shaping a mature discipline—born at the intersection of various historical disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. His founding of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry in 1967 played a pivotal role in materializing this vision.
