We present a definition of an IPv6 over Low-power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) extension for IPsec, supporting both authentication header and encapsulating security payload. We implement and a thorough perform testbed performance evaluation of the 6LoWPAN/IPsec extension. We show the performance gains obtained from the usage of cryptographic hardware support of 802.15.4 transceivers. We experimentally show that 6LoWPAN/IPsec outperforms 802.15.4 link-layer security as the payload size and/or the number of hops increase.
