This work demonstrates the applicability of game theory toward mitigating congestion-based denial-of-service attacks. The proposed game-inspired defense architecture (GIDA) is housed in a gateway between a target server and the Internet. It monitors incoming traffic and performs corrective measures during attacks. GIDA is implemented using open-source tools such as Bro intrusion detection system, Dummynet network emulator and FreeBSD IP packet filter (IPFW) and is evaluated on public testbeds such as DeterLab.
