The cost-effective self-assembly of 80 nm Au nanoparticles into well-ordered varrays, which exhibit specific optical resonances due to strong interparticle coupling, is demonstrated. A photoluminescence enhancement 3–5 times larger than those previously reported is shown. An estimate of the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy electromagnetic enhancement factor of 104 is obtained by correlating Raman signals with high-resolution microscopy images of quantum dots on Au arrays and of 108 for benzenethiol molecules at larger excitation wavelengths.
