A new, versatile substrate design for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is introduced that provides better illumination and collection efficiency than other solid substrates. By in-situ partial sintering of self-assembled sheets of small ligated gold nanoparticles into larger nanoparticle assemblies with very narrow gaps, the approach can be used for the detection of trace amounts of molecules in the liquid, solid, and possibly gas phases.
