Folic acid functionalized two-photon absorbing nanoparticles with aggregation induced emission characteristics are fabricated in a one-step procedure using a mixture of lipid-PEG-folate and lipid-PEG as the matrix. The obtained fluorescent nanoparticles show good biocompatibility and a large two photon absorption cross-section with far-red/near infrared fluorescence signature, which is ideal for live cell and animal imaging.
