Optical dark-field light microscopy (DF) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) offer the possibility to visualize gold nanoparticles inside cells. Herein, this viewable information is used to develop a technique for nanoparticle uptake quantification purely based on microscopy, which at the same time gives deeper insight into nanoparticle–cell interaction.
