Tunable color generation from silicon nanowires is realized using simple diffraction. The generated colors depend on the angle of incidence of the incoming light, the spacing between the nanowires, and the local refractive index. In this context, a refractive index sensor is designed which linearly responds to changes in the local refractive index, and has the capability to resolve index changes on the order of 5 × 10−4 using only a simple trichromatic RGB decomposition of the color image.
