Intrauterine inflammation can enhance the materno-fetal transfer of nanoparticles in the late gestation stage of murine pregnancy in a size-dependent manner. In intrauterine inflammatory mice, small-sized Au nanoparticles (3 and 13 nm in diameter) can cross the placental barrier, while larger Au nanoparticles (32 nm in diameter) cannot cross the placental barrier.
