Bioinspired layer-structured graphene oxide-poly(vinyl alcohol) nanocomposites similar to nacre are prepared in the laboratory. These nanocomposites show ∼360 MPa tensile strength and a 42 GPa modulus. Mechanical results indicate that the modulus and strength of these nanocomposites are mainly affected by the bonding types between the two phases. Tensile and creep tests further illustrate the influence of polymer molecular weight on the failure behavior of the nanocomposites.
