M. Oh and co-workers create very uniform Eu3+-doped luminescent silica@coordination polymer core–shell microspheres through the growth of coordination polymers on silica surfaces. On page 561 they describe how the doping ratio within the coordination polymer shell is easily controlled by varying the amounts of metal ions used during the reactions. The following calcination and etching processes on silica@coordination polymer core–shell microspheres result in the production of doping ratio-controlled luminescent silica@Gd2O3:Eu core–shell and hollow Gd2O3:Eu microspheres.
