Neuropathic pain-like stimuli can accelerate the ascending pain pathway and eventually induce over-activity of the astrocytes and the suppression of GABA transmission in the anterior cingulate cortex, which may promote sleep disturbance under pain. Activated astrocytes may, at least in part, induce insomnia in patients with neuropathic pain.
