Using activity-dependent GABAA receptor blocker, picrotoxin, the authors show that synchronous and asynchronous inhibitory postsynaptic currents in cultured hippocampal neurons are mediated by different pools of GABAA receptors. This means that single inhibitory neuron acts on different postsynaptic targets depending on its own discharge frequency.
