Previously we have shown that cocaine and heroin combinations increases synaptic dopamine in a synergistic manner. Analysis of dopamine transporter binding following speedball self-administration revealed these changes are due in part to increased affinity at low affinity sites and increased abundance of high-affinity sites on the dopamine transporter.
