This account describes the development of a research effort in the determination of proteins for cancer diagnostics based on electrochemical detection. It reviews the recent history of nanoparticles in protein immunosensors, then describes ultrasensitive protein immunosensors that can detect as little as 1 fg mL−1 protein achieved by combining nanostructured electrodes with multi-labeled particles. Ultrasensitive multiple protein detection system is achieved by using similar principles combined with microfluidics.
