Julia M. Brown, Brenna A. LaBarre and Ian Hewson Characterization of Trichodesmium-associated viral communities in the eastern Gulf of Mexico FEMS Microbiology Ecology 84
The marine diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium is an important component of tropical and subtropical oligotrophic marine ecosystems, providing organic carbon and nitrogen and surfaces on which microorganisms can aggregate. This study suggests that there is a diverse consortium of viruses associated with the collapse of Trichodesmium aggregations. This collapse leads to drastic changes in the chemical and physical properties of surrounding waters eliciting a response from the microbial community and their associated viruses.
