An important technical hurdle that must be addressed before biocatalytic latex coatings can be used as “off-the-shelf” catalysts for hydrogen production, or other applications, is that of maintaining bioactivity stability as a function of long-term storage. In this study, latex-embedded cells of R. palustris were stored in a dry state at room temperature for up to 3 months while maintaining their original hydrogen production activity. Successful preservation of cell activity required the addition of select osmotic stabilizers, i.e. sucrose or trehalose, to the coating mixture, low relative humidity (<5%) and anaerobic conditions during storage.
