The paper describes a computational model of a heterogeneous network of excitatory neurons that supposedly is involved in generation of rhythmic bursting activities observed in the pre-Bötzinger complex in vitro. We analyse the possible roles of network connections, ionotropic and metabotropic synaptic mechanisms, intracellular Ca2+ release, and the Na+/K+ pump in generation of these rhythmic activities and demonstrate the existence of multiple oscillatory regimes and their state-dependency.
