The quantitative analysis of BrdU-labeling showed active proliferation of endothelial cells in the ME of adult mice (53.8 times greater that in the cerebral cortex). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 were expressed highly at presynaptic terminals and endothelial cells in the external zone of the ME, respectively. SU11248, a VEGFR- and PDGFR-associated tyrosine kinase inhibitor decreased the number of BrdU-positive endothelial cells.
