Karin Schon, Robert S. Ross, Michael E. Hasselmo and Chantal E. Stern Complementary roles of medial temporal lobes and mid-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for working memory for novel and familiar trial-unique visual stimuli European Journal of Neuroscience 37
We contrasted fMRI activity for working memory for trial-unique familiar vs. novel scenes at encoding, maintenance, and retrieval using a Sternberg task. Our findings demonstrate that the observed novelty effect in the MTL during working memory encoding and maintenance is specific to novel stimuli, regardless of stimulus trial-uniqueness. Our results show that the mid-dlPFC is recruited for monitoring of scene familiarity during encoding and retrieval in the context of a working memory task.
