We contrasted fMRI activity for working memory for trial-unique familiar vs. novel scenes at encoding, maintenance, and retrieval using a Sternberg task. Our findings demonstrate that the observed novelty effect in the MTL during working memory encoding and maintenance is specific to novel stimuli, regardless of stimulus trial-uniqueness. Our results show that the mid-dlPFC is recruited for monitoring of scene familiarity during encoding and retrieval in the context of a working memory task.
