The presubiculum is situated at the transition between archicortex and neocortex. Cluster analysis identified groups of neurons with similar electrical and anatomical properties situated in superficial, intermediate and deep layers. Layer IV cells, of the lamina dissecans, fired in bursts of action potentials. Principal cells from other layers discharged regularly, with very little frequency adaptation, consistent with a possible role in a maintained signalling of head direction.
