The mechanisms for long-range signalling from the periphery for axon attraction remain largely unknown. Here we show by a proteomic approach that Xenopus skin synthesises and secretes the matrix metalloproteinase MMP-18. We also demonstrate that MMP-18 is capable of promoting directed axonal growth from dorsal root ganglion- peripheral nerve preparations.
