In normal mouse brains, immunoreactivity for cathepsin C (CC) was found to be granular in the perikarya of neurons in distinct brain regions, especially in the CA2 subfield of the hippocampus. CC-immunoreactivity was significantly up-regulated in activated microglial cells mainly in the thalamus deficient in cathepsin D and in the ipsilateral hippocampus after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.
