Social isolation rearing produces early life stress and behavioral alterations including increased anxiety-like behavior and increased self-administration of abused drugs and alcohol. We demonstrate that isolation rearing increases dopamine release and transporter activity in the nucleus accumbens and that these changes endure into adulthood. These increases are specific to adolescent isolation, suggesting a critical period for the effects of early life stress on dopamine function.
