Thioredoxin (Trx) is a key player in redox homeostasis in plant cells. A calcium-dependent protein kinase 21 (AtCPK21) was identified as a novel Trx target and redox regulation of AtCPK21 by Trx then demonstrated in vitro. Oxidation of AtCPK21 decreased the kinase activity but Trx-h1 effectively restored the activity. An intramolecular disulfide bond Cys97–Cys108 was responsible for this redox modulation.
