We have comprehensively investigated the adaptive mechanism of tomato 14-3-3 proteins to low phosphorus stress, and demonstrated that TFT6 and TFT7, two different members of tomato 14-3-3 gene family, play distinct roles in this adaptation process. TFT6 acts mainly in leaves and is involved in the systemic response to low-phosphorus-stress, while TFT7 directly functions in root by participating in the local response to low-phosphorus-stress. The obtained results can extend our understanding of the isoform-specificity of plant 14-3-3 proteins in response to low-phosphorus-stress. To top it off, TFT6 or TFT7 will be useful for the improvement of phosphorus use efficiency in crop under low phosphorus stress.
