Patients with Henoch–Schonlein purpura (HSP) may progress to HSP nephritis, the metal-dependent degradation enzymes matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and its inhibitor tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1 may play a role in the development of proliferative nephritis. The current study indicates that the serum and urinary MMP-9, TIMP-1 and MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio may be potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of HSP nephritis.
