This cross-sectional study analysed the use of newer phosphate binders sevelamer, cinacalcet, and lanthanum and their impact of serum phosphate lowering in an Australian nephrology clinical practice. These changes have been at an additional cost of AUD 2444/patient per year although serum phosphate and PTH remained unchanged. Data to address clinical end-points of mortality and hospitalization are needed to determine if the cost of these newer agents is warranted.
