The accuracy of classical prognostic markers in patients with PPE is not ideal. When used in combination with classical biomarkers, CRP levels may be used to aid decision-making in the treatment of patients with non-purulent PPE, whereas serum CRP may be useful for predicting residual pleural thickening in these patients.
