In a mouse model of kainic acid (KA)-induced epilepsy, a highly selective nNOS inhibitor, Nw-propyl-L-arginine (L-NPA) reduces: the severity and duration of convulsive motor seizures, the power of EEG in the gamma band, the frequency of epileptiform spikes during status epilepticus, c-Fos expression in the dentate granule cells at 2 h post-KA, hippocampal gliosis and synaptogenesis at 72 h post-KA, and the overall rate of epileptiform spiking (by 2 to 2.5 fold) in the first 7 days post-KA.
