Asymmetrical processing of pain by the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) is reported. While the CeA has a high content of nociceptive neurones, little is known about its neuronal function in neuropathy in vivo. We found time-dependent higher neuronal activity in left and right CeA after peripheral nerve injury, with the right CeA dominating at 14 days after injury. The changes in neuronal activity were inhibited by pregabalin. The data is discussed in terms of pain and anxiety.
