Detailed somatotopic maps in motor cortex obtained using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) show complex within-limb organisation, including the double representation of the wrist and elbow at different locations in the same motor area (e.g. primary motor cortex), which is consistent with the representation of synergistic forelimb movements.
