To elucidate the causal role of the supplementary eye field (SEF) in the generation of saccades, electrical stimulation was applied during saccade preparation. Stimulation delayed saccades when monkeys attempted to make a self-initiated saccade within a fixed time interval following the visual cue, but did not when they made a saccade in response to the fixation point offset. Our results suggest that the signals in the SEF may regulate the timing of self-initiated, but not reactive, saccades.
