Under anaerobic conditions, purple bacteria derive energy from photosynthesis. Rhodobacter sphaeroides exhibits a unique phenotype under semi-aerobic conditions where photosynthesis genes are specifically repressed by blue-light illumination. We have developed a mathematical model which identifies kinetic and stoichiometric constrains for the emergence of such a phenotype. It can also explain the diminished light sensitivity observed in a mutant strain
