Laforin, a dual-specificity protein phosphatase involved in Lafora disease (a fatal neurodegenerative disorder), directly dephosphorylates glycogen, but other proteinaceous substrates have remained elusive. Recently, an emerging set of laforin binding partners have been described, suggestive of laforin roles in other cellular processes such as response to ER stress and misfolded protein clearance by the lysosomal pathway.
